A short history of driving goggles from World War II onwards.
During World War II and in the years that followed, driving goggles were widely used for various reasons but particularly by military personnel. In the 1940s, they were obviously mainly worn by military drivers, pilots and other personnel to protect their eyes from dust, debris, wind and glare while operating vehicles or aircraft. This was particularly important in desert environments or during airborne missions.
During this era they were typically made from durable materials such as leather, metal, glass, and later plastics. They were designed to be rugged and provided a snug fit to shield the eyes effectively.
The post-war popularity of motorcycle goggles.
After the war, driving goggles continued to be used by civilians, especially by motorcyclists, vintage car enthusiasts, and sports car drivers. They became something of a fashion statement and a symbol of a bygone era, with their classic designs and associations with ‘Britain’s finest hour’.
They evolved in style and design over time, and became parts of various subcultures; in other words, they were no longer just a functional item but also a statement piece.
The design of driving goggles from that period had a lasting impact on eyewear design, influencing the creation of modern sunglasses, particularly those with a sporty or aviator-style aesthetic.
Our collection includes these Nannini Biker V4 Optical Goggles which feature an internal mounting which permanently holds prescription lenses via two screws. All you need to do is take the goggles to your optician for fitting.
Meanwhile, aviator goggles retained their iconic status and became a fashion statement in the 1950s and beyond.
They were popularised by movies, particularly those featuring aviators or adventurous characters. These goggles, reminiscent of aviation heritage, were often associated with the daring spirit of pilots and adventurers.
While modern windshields have reduced the necessity of driving goggles, they are still used in some specialised fields like motorsports. Those passionate about vintage cars and planes also love them.
Aviators, like the above, were particularly popular during the war and beyond.
They were an essential part of their gear, protecting their eyes from high-altitude winds and maintaining visibility during flight.
These Jeanet Aviator Retro Cuir Mask Goggles are a stylish and highly comfortable design that come with clear polycarbonate 10/10 lenses, which comply with EC PREN 1998. Whether you’re a hill climber, circuit racer or open top pilot, these could be ideal.
